Connecticut headlines. National headlines.
Every story links to its original publisher.

Editorial Standards and Corrections

How CONN selects, labels and ranks headlines, how we handle corrections, and how we stay independent.

What CONN is

CONN: Charter Oak News Network is a Connecticut-focused news site that gathers headlines from outlets across the state and the country and links each one back to the publisher that reported it. We take the name from the Charter Oak, the tree Connecticut has long used as a symbol of its independence. We also publish original explainers about Connecticut government and civic life, written by the CONN staff.

How we choose headlines

Headlines come from the public news feeds of the outlets listed on our Sources page. A computer program collects them every few minutes, removes duplicates, and sorts them into Connecticut and National sections. Nothing is rewritten. Each headline is shown the way the publisher wrote it, with a short excerpt when the publisher provides one, and always with a link to the full story on the publisher’s own site.

Where we lean, and how we say so

CONN is a conservative-leaning site. Our ranking gives extra weight to conservative and policy-focused outlets, and we keep adding sources in that space. We also include mainstream Connecticut television and newspaper sources so readers can see what the rest of the state is reading. Every story carries the name of the outlet that published it, so you always know whose reporting you are about to read. A link is not an endorsement, and we do not claim any outlet’s reporting as our own.

Original content

Pieces marked as CONN explainers are written by the CONN staff and cite their sources at the bottom. They are meant to explain how things work, not to argue a side. Opinion headlines that appear in our feeds are labeled as opinion by their publishers and are the views of their authors.

Corrections

If we get something wrong in an explainer, in how a headline was labeled, or in the name of a source, we will fix it and note the change on the page. To request a correction, use the contact page and include the page address and what should change. If a mistake is in a publisher’s own story, the publisher is the one who can change it, but we will remove or relabel a listing if you tell us it is wrong.

Independence and advertising

CONN is independently owned and operated. If advertising or sponsorships ever appear on the site, they will be clearly marked as advertising and kept separate from headlines, and they will not change how stories are chosen or ranked.
